Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Traumatic brain injury in the mild form is often described as a concussion, caused by a blow or jolt to the head that disrupts the function of the brain. This injury is common to servicemembers deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) war zones. Blast related injuries presents several layers of problems in treating the OEF OIF Veterans. Blast related injuries include post-concussion syndromes or mild to moderate traumatic brain injuries; visual impairment, auditory injury, musculoskeletal damage, along with psychiatric and psychosocial impairment. The process starts with the completion of a traumatic brain injury screening which is done during your first primary care visit. One of the common questions our Veterans ask is, "So I have TBI, what can be done about it?" If your TBI screening is positive, your primary care team will discuss the findings and complete a consultation to our Rehabilitation Department where you will receive a comprehensive secondary evaluation. For those service members who are identified to have sustained a traumatic brain injury, specialty referrals may be made which may include the Interdisciplinary Polytrauma Chronic Pain Clinic, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Audiology, Optometry, Mental Health, and the Freedom Center for ongoing case management.

The TBI Coordinator for Dayton VAMC is: Jemma Ayvazian, Nurse Practitioner.
