The Physical Therapy staff at the Dayton VA Medical Center provides evaluations of muscle strength, sensibility, and joint function.

Physical Therapy clinics are located in the acute care and intermediate care areas.

Administrative Support is provided by a supervisory rehabilitation therapist, a secretary, and a clerk-typist.

The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service is involved in ongoing research projects with Wright State University and Wright Patterson Air Force Base.

Our Mission as the Spinal Cord Injury/Disorder Clinic (SCI/D) is to promote and maintain the health, independence, quality of life, and productivity of Veterans with spinal cord injury and/or disorders. Our mission is accomplished through a comprehensive health care delivery system that includes rehabilitation; medical care; patient and family education; and psychological and social care.

The SCI/D Team. The Spinal Cord Clinic at Dayton VAMC is an Outpatient Support Clinic affiliated with the Spinal Cord Center at the Cleveland, Ohio VAMC. Together the two hospitals provide a full-range of care to Veterans who have sustained an injury or a generally stable neurological impairment of the spinal cord.

The SCI/D Team includes the SCI/D Coordinator (Social Worker), Physician, Nurse Practitioner, Nurse, consultative services of other PM&R specialties, and other services required to sustain care as the Veteran's clinical needs dictate. The SCI/D Clinic staff will provide a multidisciplinary consultative service to monitor all admitted SCI/D inpatients; assist the admitting service in providing for the unique patient care needs; advise staff regarding pertinent SCI/D practice guidelines and standards of care; and assist with coordinated discharge planning.

The SCI/D team will:

• Coordinate the outpatient SCI/D support clinic for annual health assessment and indicated follow-up evaluation. The SCI/D Clinic staff includes the SCI/D Coordinator (Social Worker), Physician, Nurse Practitioner and Nurse.
• Facilitate local admission or referral to the Network SCI/D Center at the VA Medical Center, Cleveland, Ohio. The SCI/D Coordinator will coordinate this process. Provide education to patients, family, caretakers, and staff regarding the nature of SCI patho-physiology and prevention of avoidable complications.
• Coordinate with the Primary Care Physician (PCP). If an SCI/D eligible Veteran lives within commuting distance to the Dayton VA Medical Center and has no PCP, the SCI/D physician may be appointed as the primary provider.
• Establish, with assistance from IRM, a mechanism to identify SCI/D patients admitted to acute and sub-acute care. The SCI/D team will work in a consultative role with the admitting team of physicians.
• Promote individualized education regarding spinal cord injury for patients, family, caretakers, and staff via pertinent verbal, written or audiovisual materials.
• Establish a quality improvement (QI) program to monitor the quality and appropriateness of services provided. The QI process will use instruments to objectively measure outcomes, resource utilization, patient satisfaction, and continuing staff education. The SCI/D team will report results at monthly Rehabilitation Care Line Quality Improvement Committee Meetings.

Also:

• Maintain the VISTA Spinal Cord Dysfunction Registry.
• Meet with all eligible Veterans to determine the level of community support required.
• Assist with discharge planning, including referral to appropriate VA, community agencies and home healthcare.
• Facilitate quarterly meetings of the SCI team.

Who is eligible?

Eligibility as defined by VHA SCI/D policy is determined by the Spinal Cord Injury/Disorder (SCI/D) team based upon a review of records, and a comprehensive health examination, if necessary. All Veterans (inpatients and outpatients) diagnosed with Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders (SCI/D) will be identified and referred to the SCI/D Clinic for evaluation. A multidisciplinary team of clinical staff will coordinate SCI/D services across the continuum of care. Special Events Physical activity, friendly competition and recreation therapy engage the mind as well as the body and can contribute significantly to an improved quality of life. VA's four national rehabilitation special events provide disabled and elderly Veterans with challenging opportunities to accomplish feats many may have believed were no longer available to them because of their disabilities or their age.
