Dayton VAMC Hires New Chief of Medical Service

Effective September 27, 2013, Dr. Harry J. Ward, assumed the role of Chief of Medical Service at the Dayton VAMC. In this position, Dr. Ward is responsible for providing oversight over all medical staff in Medical Service.

The Dayton VAMC is a state of the art medical center that provides care to over 37,000 Veterans a year, with over 6,000 inpatient admission and 192,000 outpatient visits annually. The Dayton VA Medical Center provides a full range of health care through medical, surgical, mental health (inpatient and outpatient), home and community health programs, geriatric (nursing home), physical medicine, therapy services, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and hospice.

Dr. Ward attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota and entered Howard University College of Medicine at the age of 19 years. After graduating with high honors, Dr. Ward was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed his medicine internship at Cook County Hospital, Chicago and residency training at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. Additionally, Dr. Harry J. Ward completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in immunopathology and clinical nephrology training at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, CA.

Dr. Ward currently serves as a Captain in the U.S. Naval Reserve and has been mobilized to active duty on three separate occasions. He served in the Persian Gulf War (USS Cleveland), Masar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan, and Landstuhl Hospital, Germany. Captain Ward is a graduate of the Naval War College and active in Navy Medicine leadership in his newest position as Specialty Leader, Internal Medicine and Nephrology, Reserve Medical Corps.
