Exhibit: Early Years

Home Chapel in 1870, this is the first permanent church constructed by the U.S. Government. The veterans, many with war injuries, quarried the limestone themselves from the Home grounds. Restoration is planned in partnership with American Veterans Heritage Center.

Children pose on the lawn in front of the Bandstand (1874-1878). A grand review of the veterans, who were organized in lines, occurred here on special occasions. This was also the site of picnics and concerts by the Home Band.

The Home Store was a favorite meeting place for veterans. Veterans were able to purchase almost any item that was in a city store, and at the same price.
