The Soldiers Monument was dedicated on September 12, 1877. The column formerly adorned old Bank of the United States in Philadelphia.

A gun salute was fired in the cemetery at each veteran's funeral.

The first burial in the Dayton National Cemetery was in September 1867. Wooden headboards painted white were originally used to mark the graves. In 1882, they were replaced with marble headstones. Home Hospital is in the background.
