Starting Research

INSTRUCTIONS FOR GETTING STARTED IN RESEARCH AT THE DAYTON VAMC:

STEPS:

  1. Complete an edited draft of your study

  2. Take the CITI course:  http://www.citiprogram.org

    The VA course is mandatory if you want to conduct your study at the VA.  You have to affiliate with the Dayton VA-552 to get the VA course options. 

  3. Call the Research Office to schedule an appointment with the Coordinator for Research (C/R&D) to review your study

  4. Once approved by C/R&D, the Without Compensation (WOC) process can begin if needed

  5. Submit FINAL documents for review to the Administrative Officer (AO/R&D) along with the following documents:

    • Expedited

      Expedited Review Board: Research activity involving more than minimal risk to the subject.

    • Full Board

      Full Institutional Review Board: Research activity involving no more than minimal risk to the subject.

    • Expedited Review by the Expedited Review Advisory Committee

      Exempt Research: Eligibility of protocols for exemption under current NIH guidelines is determined by the IRB Chair.

    Minimal risk means that the probability and magnitude of harm or discomfort anticipated in the research are not greater in and of themselves than those ordinarily encountered in daily life or during the performance of routine physical or psychological examinations or tests.
